HARAG conference ends

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, has emphasized that the current generation needed to plan and create for themselves an appropriate quality environment sustainable for the next generation.

He pointed out that environmental awareness and sustainability for quality living in the society was not only a compelling necessity, but also an obligation.

Prof Asabere-Ameyaw said these in an address read for him at the Fifth Biennial International Conference of Home Economic Research Association of Ghana (HARAG) at Winneba.

About two hundred members of the Association from Ghana and Nigeria attended the two-day conference under the theme: “Environmental Awareness and Sustainability for Quality Living”.

He said in order to succeed in this, “we have to provide special environmental information which will be used to eliminate any environmental problem or as a basis for creating and undertaking specific environmental awareness and measures”.

Prof Asabere-Ameyaw said the sustainable use of all the natural resources should be the basis for health, prosperous communities and sustainable livelihoods.

He hoped that with the gathering of experts in Home economics and related professions in the sub region, the conference would help advance knowledge in the areas of environmental education, and environmental sustainability for the common good of the country.

The Central Regional Director of Zoomlion, Mr Ernest Kusi said issues such as ineffective waste disposal systems, pollution of water and air, deforestation, uncontrolled extraction of minerals, posed a serious threat to environmental sustainability.

“These environmental issues will continue to rise until we change out negative attitude towards the environment”.

He said Zoomlion Ghana Limited was playing a role in this direction through public campaign in the mass media, and the formation of Zoom kids clubs in Public and Private schools, where children are taught to value the environment.

Mr Kusi pointed out that environmental sustainability would not be achieved if people were not well informed on environmental issues.
