HIV/AIDS peer educators end workshop at Nsawam

Nsawam, Nov 1, GNA - One hundred and fifty peer educators at the weekend ended a five-day workshop on sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV/AIDS, at Nsawam in the Akwapim South District. The workshop, which was organised by the Patriotic Development Organisation (PDO), a non-governmental organisation enabled the participants to learn about self-awareness, counselling, behavioural change, the use of the condom and support to people living with HIV/AIDS.

The Reverend Ohene Djan, Co-ordinator of PDO, urged the participants to take what they had learnt workshop seriously and to co-operate with the AIDS Committee in the districts for the success of the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Mr Fred Owusu Akowuah, Akwapim South Monitoring and Evaluation Focal Person on HIV/AIDS, said the disease had become a serious socio-economic issue and called on the people particularly the youth to show more concern.

He said the disease was killing many people who in their most productive period and stressed that the time had come to intensify the campaign against the disease.

Mr Akowuah called for more efforts to create awareness especially among the youth through their peers.

He commended the NGO for its efforts and advised the participants to impact the knowledge they had acquired to their colleagues. 1 Nov 04
