Tema, Aug, 4, GNA – HOGFE Foundation, an international non-governmental organisation (NGO) on Thursday donated an ambulance and a number of medical equipment valued at 600,000 Euros to Tema General Hospital.

The items shipped from Germany in a 40-foot container included; 27 hospital beds, three baby beds, three mother/baby beds, one emergency unit bed, 400 op. Suction, extraction unit and 27 bedside cabinets.

Right Reverend Dr Vincent Albert Duodu Boateng, Founder and President of HOGFE who handed over the equipment to the medical authorities said the NGO which started 12 years ago, was making its second donation to the hospital after the maiden gesture in 2009.

“HOGFE has so far made similar donations...to Korle bu Teaching Hospital in 2010 worth millions of cedis with the vision of improving the health delivery system of Ghana and to help boost the efforts of the country to achieve the health component of the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

“Today’s donation is part of our mission to extend hands to the needy, who require the glowing affection of philanthropists and the international community to be able to attend to their physical, emotional, mental and spiritual deficits,” he said.

Rt Rev Boateng said the donation was facilitated by the “love and concern the citizens of Germany have extended to Ghanaians to uplift the quality of health care in Ghana”.

He said the hard work of donors such as TBM Medizintechnik, SEZ Stiftung Entwieklungs, Zusammenarbeit Baden-Wurttemberg and Zusammernarbeit and Mr Philip Okyere, Vice President of HOGFE Foundation made the donation possible.

Dr Charity Sarpong, Medical Director of the hospital who lauded the initiative of the NGO said it was a prove that the private sector and other stakeholders were aware that government alone could not shoulder the problems of the medical facility.

She said the donation of the ambulance was timely because the hospital operated with only one of the facility, which often interfered with emergencies cases that should be transferred promptly for medical attention.

Mr Ebenhard Schange, German Ambassador said the donation was in line with the long standing co-operation between Ghana and Germany especially in the health sector, which had witnessed the training of a number of Ghanaian professionals in his country.

Madam Marian Tackie, who represented the Ministry of Health, noted that the logistics deficit confronting the country’s public medical facilities called for such private initiatives to address the problem.
