Buoyem (B/A), Aug. 20, GNA- Forty-two houses constructed by Habitat for Humanity, an NGO at a cost of 400 million cedis have been handed over to the beneficiaries at Buoyem in Techiman District in Brong Ahafo. Each house has three bedrooms, kitchen, bath and toilet and beneficiaries are to pay back the cost within 15 years through contribution of one bag of cement a month.
Mr Ato Mensah, Brong Ahafo Regional Coordinator for the NGO said seven more houses would be constructed in the area by the end of the year.
He explained that the organisation "seeks to accommodate the rural poor through the provision of decent and affordable houses". Habitat has provided more than 3,600 houses in communities since it started operations in the country in 1987.
Mr Mensah appealed to beneficiaries not to default in the repayment so that others too could benefit from the scheme. Mr Isaac Osei Antwi, District Chief Executive, commended the people for their communal spirit in the execution of the project and advised them to ensure regular maintenance of the buildings.
Nana Adjei Ameyaw, Chairman of Buoyem Habitat affiliate, lauded the efforts of Global Village, a US/UK volunteer force, in the construction of the houses.
The Buoyemhene, Nana Okomafo Dwena-Akenten, said he has released more than 60 hectares of land for the construction of more houses in the area.
He urged the people to keep clean surroundings to help improve their health.
