The Martin Luther King Health Training School in Accra is to establish a Dambai campus in the Volta Region to train personnel to cater for people in the community and its environs.
The Dambai Campus to be established in September was a request by the Chief, Nana Chikpa Kwame II, the elders and people of Dambai-Wankayaw.
The school, which is affiliated to the Weber State University, Utah in the US and Brookdale Community College, New Jersey, USA, has been undertaking programmes to elevate itself to become a college as it has secured accreditation from the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Allied Health Professional Council (AHPC) and others.
Established in 2007 with 45 students, the Martin Luther Health Training School has 300 students on enrolment at its Accra Campus, having trained over 1,000 students who are working in health facilities in the country.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Wednesday, Dr. Owusu Achaw Duah, Founder and CEO of Martin Luther Health Training School, one of the group of Companies of the Kings Nursing and Allied Health College, said the Dambai Campus had been approved and accredited by NVTI and that it would be operated as a pilot project.
“If successful, campuses will be established in other parts of the country, especially at Offinso South in the Ashanti Region and in the Western Region, all in our bid to help meet the health care needs of the people,” Dr. Duah said.
He said the chief of Wankayaw-Dambai and his elders had also assisted the School to acquire a five-unit classroom structure with two offices, as well as made arrangement for qualified health care instructors to run the school.
He said courses to be studied at the Dambai Campus would include health career, computer studies and business administration.
Dr. Duah, a former Head of Chemical Pathology of the University of Ghana Medical School, said a parcel of land was being secured to build permanent structures for the College including a teaching hospital and a guest house.
He said new programmes such as Diploma in General Nursing, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Imaging General, Health Information Technology and Environmental and Safety Health would soon be rolled out as part of programmes when the School attains accreditation for tertiary status.
Dr. Duah, a former Member of Parliament for Offinso South, said, “we are poised to make a significant contribution to health care through excellence and innovation in the training of health professionals and promotion of health care”.
The school obtained 100 percent pass in the Laboratory Technicians Professional Examination in the 2013 Allied Health Professional Council of the Ministry of Health and 82 per cent pass in the professional examination by the Nurses and Midwifery Council.
