Tuluwe(NR), May 1, GNA - The people of Tuluwe in Central Gonja District of Northern Region on Wednesday, counted their blessings when a health centre to take care of their basic health needs was inaugurated. The GH¢36,000 facility was built by a Ghanaian philanthropist, Dr David Mensah, Director of Northern Ghana Empowerment Association, a Tamale-based NGO with assistant from Makbraneth Foundation of Canada.
Speaking at the inauguration, Dr Mensah said the plight of the people during a visit to the community two years ago was pathetic. He said people died of diseases that could have been cured with the availability of a health facility manned by a qualified health worker to assist the people.
Dr Mensah urged the people to cooperate with the health workers and take interest in activities of the facility to encourage them to provide the best health care delivery. Tuluwe-Wura Afinase Saaka Iddi, Chief of the community expressed appreciation to Dr Mensah for the gesture and gave the assurance that they would take good care of the facility to prolong its life span.
He commended the management of Ghana Health Service for posting a nurse to man the centre and pointed out that most of the people died from snake bites and malaria due to the absence of a health facility.
Tuluwe-Wura Afinase stressed the need for the provision of a solar energy system for the centre to operate more efficiently and effectively to preserve vital drugs and vaccines for snake bites. He appealed to the Central Gonja District Assembly, NGO's and philanthropists to assist the people construct a Junior High School (JHS) block to provide basic education to their children. "We only have a primary school block, as a result our children attend JHS in a nearby town about nine miles away," he added.
Tuluwe-Wura Afinase appealed to the assembly for access road because the traditional area was cut off from surrounding towns during the rainy season.
