Help accommodate Police at Swedru - DCE

Agona Swedru, Feb 7, GNA - The Police Administration has called on the Agona District Assembly and the Government to help complete an abandoned six-storey building for officers and men of the Swedru Divisional Police command.

The building, which was started in 1972 to accommodate more than 100 officers and men, was abandoned in 1982.

Superintendent Jonathan Adams-Godoe, Swedru Divisional Finance Officer, disclosed this when the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Agona, Mr Ben Mensah, toured the divisional and district headquarters of the police at Agona Swedru.

The tour to enable the DCE to interact with the officers and men to find solutions to their problems also took him to the Agona Swedru Government Hospital.

Superintendent Adams-Godoe said the service was encountering serious accommodation problems, saying that 10 recruits who were posted to the division could not get a place to lay their heads. He said that they had been accommodated at an obscure place for lack of accommodation, adding that, the first 10 recruits posted there were sent to the Guesthouse belonging to the Agona District Assembly. Superintendent Adams-Godoe stressed that rooms in the rented houses a Babianiha and Assesim, suburbs of Agona Swedru were leaking with the ceilings falling in.

He stated that the cells was nothing to write home about and regretted that the inmates ate, urinated, slept and eased themselves in the same room, which he described as "inhuman".

Superintendent Adams-Godoe said recently the IGP gave out 5.1 million cedis to the District Police Command to repair the iron gate of the cells, which had been broken frequently by the inmates and praised the IGP for the support Mr Mensah commended Officers and Men of the service for working in difficult conditions and assured them that the District Assembly would do everything possible to resolve some of the problems facing them if not all.

He called on the public to co-operate with the police to enable them discharge their duties effectively to protect life and property. The DCE stated that the district assembly would look into its budget either this or next year to see how the abandoned building could be completed to provide decent accommodations for offices and personnel of the service. 07 Feb 06
