Help promote cultural activities in districts - Director

Effiduase (Ash), Feb. 2, GNA - A call has gone to the district assemblies to help promote cultural activities in the districts through the provision of facilities for cultural activities.

Mr Samuel Francis Adjei, Ashanti Regional Director of the Centre for National Culture, who made the call, said a lot of cultural talents could be unearthed in the rural communities if there were facilities in the districts for people to exhibit their talents.

He was inaugurating a 12-member Sekyere East District Cultural Committee at Effiduase at the weekend.

The committee had Mr Kwabena Appiah-Kubi as its chairman and Oheneba Baabu, Akyeamehene of Effiduase as vice-chairman. Mr Adjei charged the committee to research into the various cultural practices in the district so as to eliminate those that were inimical to the well being of society and modify others to suit the reality of the present situation.

He asked society not to play down the use of the local languages, pointing out that if Howard University in the United States of America teaches Twi as part of its curriculum, then there was no justification for Ghanaians to shun their own language.

In an address read on his behalf, Mr Isaiah Opoku Boateng, acting Sekyere East District Chief Executive, assured the committee of the assembly's preparedness to assist by providing it with the necessary inputs to be able to work effectively.

Nana Konadu Yiadom, Queen Mother of Effiduase, appealed to the assembly to enact byelaws that will help to check the moral decadence in the youth of the district.

Other members of the committee were Mr Osei Agyenim Boateng, the District Cultural Officer as secretary, Mr Yaw Boateng, organiser, Mr Thomas Owusu Boateng, financial secretary, Mrs Mary Osei-Boateng, treasurer and Miss Cecilia Mensah, women's organiser.
