The Volta Regional Fire Service has placed the Ho Central Market under a 24-hour surveillance after a cold store and two provision shops at the market were gutted by fire on Wednesday.

The fire, said to have fallen over from a refuse container behind the shops took personnel from the Fire Service 30 minutes to control.

Madam Daniella Mawusi Ntow-Sarpong, the Regional Fire Commander, told the Ghana News Agency that personnel of the Service savaged three other shops after controlling the fire.

She said the Command had placed the market and other “sensitive points” under surveillance to ensure proper use of naked fire to avoid such disasters.

Madam Ntow-Sarpong said her outfit was investigating the cause of the fire but called for vigilance and proper use of fire as the harmattan became severe.

Some eyewitnesses commended the Fire Service for the quick response and said the whole market could have been gutted but for the swift intervention. Fire disasters, especially bushfires were said to be on the decline in the Region, with only 50 cases recorded in November, 2017 as against 76 in 2016.
