Hohoe celebrates farmer with disability

Abla Adade, a 32-year old farmer with disability, from Akpafu-Adorkor in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region, was honoured for her exploits in agriculture in the Municipal Farmers Day celebration on Friday.

Madam Adade, who cultivates four acres each of corn, rice and cocoa in addition to livestock rearing, received a knapsack sprayer, boots and cutlass at the event held at Akpafu-Adorkor.

She told the Ghana News Agency that her condition limited her hours on the farm to four days a week.

Madam Adade said she suffered a condition of her legs at age 10, which latter affected her whole body, forcing her to use a support staff for mobility.

She expressed the hope of expanding her farm to add plantain and banana.

Mr Teddy Ofori, the Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive, said more than 6000 farmers were captured under the Planting for Food and Jobs in the Municipality and expressed worry over the under-usage of subsidised inputs under the programme.

He asked the people to prepare for the "Rearing for Food and Jobs" to be rolled out in 2019, expected to increase poultry and piggery production.

This year's celebration is on the theme: "Agriculture; Moving Ghana Beyond Aid".

A total of nine farmers from the Municipality received certificates and prizes.

Boeyawor, a farmers group made up predominantly of women, received the best prize, which included a tricycle and other farm inputs.

The event was supported by the Development Action Association, a Non-Governmental Organisation, assisting rural women farmers across the country
