A former two-term constituency chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Lower Manya Krobo in the Eastern Region, David Walter Hormenu, has officially declared his intention to contest again for the position, citing the need to restore unity and improve the welfare of party members.

Hormenu, who served as chairman from 2014 to 2022 before losing to the current constituency chairman and Municipal Chief Executive, John Atter Matey, said his decision follows careful reflection on the current state of the party in the constituency.

According to him, the ideals of inclusiveness, unity, and collective welfare that once defined the party’s operations at the grassroots level have weakened. He stressed that a renewed sense of direction is needed to ensure that no member feels marginalized or excluded.

“There is a need for a reset and renewed energy to ensure that nobody feels discriminated against within the constituency,” he stated, adding that his experience and familiarity with the local political landscape position him well to lead that change.

Addressing concerns about why he is seeking to return to a constituency-level role rather than moving to regional or national positions, Hormenu emphasized that service to the party is not defined by rank. He noted that strengthening the foundation at the grassroots is critical to the party’s overall success.

“If the base is not solid, moving to higher levels will not resolve the challenges. Those of us with experience must step in to rebuild and reposition the constituency,” he explained.

Hormenu was also critical of the current leadership, stating that efforts to unify the party have not been fully successful.

He alleged that opportunities and activities within the constituency have been limited to select individuals, a situation he believes undermines cohesion and grassroots participation.

Despite his previous electoral defeat, he described the experience as part of the political process, attributing the outcome partly to internal dynamics, including alliances formed by other contenders during the contest.

He acknowledged that his strong support for the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi may have created perceptions of bias, which he now intends to address.

“I have learned my lessons. Going forward, I will be more neutral in my role and ensure fairness across the board,” he said.

Highlighting his priorities, Hormenu said his foremost goal is to reunite the party, followed by improving the welfare of members and advocating for accelerated development in the Lower Manya Krobo area.

He added that the encouragement he has received from party supporters across the constituency has been overwhelming and serves as a key motivation for his comeback bid.

He concluded that political participation should not be limited to winning elections but must also focus on advancing the development interests of the constituency and improving the lives of its people.

The NDC's Constituency elections are scheduled for October, 2026.
