Hospital inaugurates Prof Orraca-Tetteh's Memorial Gate

Accra, May 25, GNA - The Reverend Father Andrew Campbell, Board Chairman of the Princess Marie Louis Hospital (PMLH) on Wednesday appealed for support in aid of an Ultra Modern Out Patient Department, Theatre and Emergency Unit to facilitate the work of the hospital.

"These would make the referral of surgical cases to Korle Bu a thing of the past" and a monument as the hospital turns 80 next June", he said.

Father Campbell made the appeal at the inauguration of a gate in memory of the late Professor Richard Orraca-Tetteh and an extension of the wall of the Rehabilitation Centre at the hospital, popularly known as the Children's Hospital in Accra.

Prof. Orraca-Tetteh, who was a Dietician and Head of the Nutrition Department of the University of Ghana and a researcher, used the Hospital for his research work.

Rev Campbell expressed concern about the filth and squalor that had engulfed the surroundings of the health facility and said, "a lot needs to be done to make the hospital worth its salt". He expressed regret that the Hospital had written several letter to the Accra Metropolitan Authority (AMA) to save the situation but all had fallen on deaf ears.

Dr Mrs Matilda Agyemang, Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, said it was for such problems that the Professor's family decided to extend the wall and fix a gate in his memory to protect the Hospital from encroachers and drug addicts, who used the premises to engage in their notorious activities.

Mr Ramsey Orraca -Tetteh, Brother of the Professor said the occasion brought inspiration to people and encouraged Ghanaians to serve mankind in their own small way as his brother did, saying, "Service to Mankind is service to God".

He noted that in all things man must strive to leave footprints that would encourage and inspire others.
