About 500 residents have been displaced in the Upper West regional capital Wa after torrential rains hit the area.

The downpour occurred two days ago and lasted three hours.

Joy News correspondent Rafik Salaam reported that the downpour destroyed properties worth millions.

According to him, residents who are mostly farmers were highly expectant of some downpour to aid the growth of their produce. The rains came, he said, but at a heavy cost. Rafik said the roads un-motorable.

A resident who spoke to Joy News, Yusif said all his belongings had been destroyed or carried away by the rains. His son's school books were not spared, he added.

Yusif appealed to the National Disaster Management Organisation, NADMO as well as government for help.

Meanwhile, the Upper West Regional Coordinator of NADMO, Alhaji Seidu Bawa, has visited the affected area with some assistance - beds and other supplies.

He urged "everybody living within this hazard zone to move and perch with relatives while we try to sort them out."
