Accra, Nov. 22, GNA - Inter-Faith Waste Management Initiative (IFAWAMI)-Ghana has declared December 16, as National Clean-up Campaign day.

The exercise will involve all religious bodies in the country to undertake an intensive nation-wide clean up exercise, which forms part of IFAWAMI's contributions and preparations towards the 50th Anniversary of Ghana's Independence.

The Right Reverend Dr. Paul Kofi Fynn, Chairman of the IFAWAMI, announcing the exercise on Wednesday at the meeting of heads of religious bodies in Accra asked all to come out in their numbers to join the campaign.

"We must team up to clean the whole country as we prepare for the 50th anniversary celebration"

"I expect all the bishops, archbishops, imams and leaders of (other) religious organisations to join this national exercise". He said.

Rev. Fynn asked his church members to liaise with Ghana@50 secretariat, all metropolitan and district assemblies, donor partners, schools, churches and all stakeholders to make the exercise a successful one.

The Chairman who also heads the Christian Council of Ghana, also proposed planting of trees to replace laying of wreaths. "In Korea ten trees are planted for each dead person instead of a wreath and I believe if this is applied in Ghana it would enrich the environment."

He also stressed the need for the construction of places of convenience by every religious organisation in the country to reduce epidemics such as cholera, typhoid and malaria in the communities.

Rev Fynn said he would embark on constant monitoring with the Steering Committee to ensure the implementation of their projects. IFAWAMI is made up of Christian Council of Ghana, Catholic Secretariat, Ghana Pentecostal Council of Independent Churches, National Association of Charismatic Churches, Tijaniyya, Bahai Faith Ahmadiayya Muslim Mission and Ahlus Sunna Wal-Jama's.

IFAWAMI is an inert religious organisation formed about a year ago with overall objective of raising awareness on sanitation.
