IGP offers dispensation for girls in three northern regions

Lawra, Nov 07, GNA - The Ghana Police Service is offering special dispensation for qualified girls in the three northern regions for recruitment into the service.

This is to address the poor number of women from the north in the service so that they could serve in their communities on completion of their training.

The Volta and Western regions are also to benefit from the special dispensation.

Mr Patrick K. Acheampong, the Inspector General of Police, said this at Lawra on Sunday when he addressed officers and men of the service at Lawra in the Lawra District. The police chief is on a four-day working visit to the Upper West Region to find out how personnel serving in region are faring, the problems facing them and how best to address them. He would also visit all police stations and posts in the region and inspect progress of work on police projects initiated by the district assemblies and the communities. These include residential accommodation and police station projects.

The IGP was of the view that when the girls return to serve in their communities on completion of their training, they could also serve as inspiration to other girls to take their education seriously. He said to qualify for selection under the dispensation; applicants should have passes in senior secondary school leaving examination and the right height by police standard.

Mr Acheampong commended the Lawra District Assembly for rehabilitating the Lawra Police Station and the district commander's bungalow at a total cost of 300 million cedis and for providing three motorbikes for the Nandom, Babile and Hamile police stations. Superintendent Daniel Sackey, the Lawra District Commander, briefed the IGP on law and order situation in the district and said stealing and assault cases as the problems in the area. Mr Sackey appealed to the IGP to post more personnel to the area and revealed that only 10 out of 22 police personnel posted to his district this year had reported for duty.

He said most police personnel consider their postings to the area as punishment hence they do everything possible to avoid serving the district.

Mr George Sulley, Lawra District Chief Executive, appealed to the IGP to consider instituting special incentive packages to serve as morale booster to police personnel posted to deprived areas such as Lawra.
