IRS urged to open offices in all districts

Nkoranza (B/A), May 10, GNA - Commercial drivers in Nkoranza District of Brong-Ahafo have asked the Internal Revenue Service to open branch offices in all districts, where they could pay their income taxes.

Mr James Nyameba Aframo, spokesman of the drivers told the Ghana News Agency that, currently, drivers had to travel to Techiman to pay their taxes because there was no IRS office at Nkoranza.

"The Techiman Revenue office serves drivers from Wenchi, Techiman, Nkoranza and Kintampo and it is regrettable that we have to queue up at the office at the end of every quarter for several hours to pay our taxes", he added.

Mr Aframo said what was more disturbing was the fact that, if a driver was not able to obtain a new tax certificate at the close of a quarter, the police would harass him on the road and this really affected their work.

"We are therefore, appealing to the IRS to consider our plight and set up offices in every district to facilitate the collection of taxes," he added.

The drivers have also alleged that officials of the Department of Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) have not been able to provide them new certificates.

Mr Aframo complained that the DVLA had provided them with temporary certificates but have waited for more than six months for the permanent ones without any positive response from the Division. He called on the DVLA to expedite action to save them from embarrassment from the police.
