Inaction of Assembly causes collapse of school

Tue, 22 Jan 2013 Source: GNA

The Adaklu-Blidokope, Amuzudevi L.A. Primary School in the Adaklu District of the Volta Region has collapsed and its teachers posted to other schools.

The six-unit classroom block has been without a roof following a directive in 2010 by the then Adaklu-Anyigbe District Assembly for the roofs to be taken off because it was poorly done by the contractor.

However, the school block is yet to be re-roofed and for over a year, pupils there had no place to hold classes.

Mr Emmanuel Tovoe, the school's Head-teacher, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the situation compelled him and other teachers to seek transfer to other schools.

Mr Mensah Amegavi, an opinion leader in the community told the GNA that the Assembly had failed to replace the roofing, compelling the community to put up a shed for the school in 2012.

He said this notwithstanding, the Ghana Education Service was yet to post teachers to the school. Mr Amegavi said pupils in the community went to the school every morning and while away the time under the shed and returned home after 12 noon.

At 1100 hours when the GNA visited the school on Monday, a few of the pupils in mufti were seated on benches under the shed idling, talking and playing pranks.

Mr Michael Kobla Adzaho, District Chief Executive of Agotime-Ziope, formerly, Adaklu-Anyigbe District said some assembly members from the area petitioned the Assembly to re-roof the building because it was leaking badly.

He said the community was advised to put up a temporary shed but it failed to do that in time which resulted in some pupils leaving the school and its eventual desertion by teachers because there were no pupils to be taught.

Mr Adzaho, however, said though the community was no longer under his jurisdiction; he was talking to GES to post teachers to the community.

The School is now in the newly created Adaklu District.
