It appears government would not find it easy in its bid to eradicate open defecation in the country by 2018 with its new policy of abolishing the construction of public toilets in the country.

The people of Namolo a suburb of Navrongo in the Kasina Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region have resorted to open defecation as the only toilet facility in the area is seen as a death trap .

According to the people of the area, the only toilet was constructed more than 10 years ago and in a very deplorable state because of the pressure from the entire community.

“It’s dangerous to enter the toilet because we fear it can break and throw us into the pit because the facility is weak that’s why we defecate outside which we think is safe”. One of them said.

In an interview with Mr Abayire an elder of the community he said the situation is worrying as the stench from the area is always unbearable.

“You can’t sit outside for fresh air because of the smell. We easily fall sick”. He added that it is sometimes embarrassing to see a respected person squatting to ease himself and been surrounded by many young men and women a situation he describes as a slap on their pride.

He is therefore calling on the Navrongo Municipal Assembly and government to come to their aid by providing them with an additional toilet facility or renovate the old one for them to salvage the situation.
