Kpone, April 08 GNA - The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Tema, Mr David Quaye-Annang, has underscored the need for building developers to always engage the services of Structural Engineers in the construction of their buildings to ensure quality work done.
He noted that most buildings even at the constructural stage collapse because of sub-standard building materials used and shoddy work on the part of masons and contractors.
Mr Annang made the call on Saturday when he and the officials of Tema office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) presented relief items to the Kpone Traditional Council (KTC) whose community centre collapsed and various properties worth over 600 million cedis destroyed in last Sunday's rains.
While the MCE donated two bundles of roofing sheets, a computer and accessories to the Council, NADMO also supported some fishermen with a box of cooking oil and bags of rice.
Mr Annang said after the disaster, engineers of the Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA) inspected the building and detected that the blocks were full of sand with little cement.
He stressed the need for effective supervision at every stage of building construction to ensure that proper work was being done and promised that the engineers from the Assembly would supervise the re-construction of the Community Centre.
The whole building collapsed and caved into the chief's office and the general office destroying their files, computers and books. The Registrar of the Council, Mr Harry Attipoe received the items and promised that they would be used for the intended purpose.
