Drobo (B/A) June 27, GNA - Mr. Andrew Badu-Yeboah, acting Director of Education in Jaman District in Brong Ahafo has warned to deal drastically with deviant teachers in the area.
He said measures were being taken to curb negative practices as truancy, absenteeism, failure to prepare lesson notes, lateness and alcoholism, among teachers.
The acting director was speaking at the District's 2003 Best Teaching/Non-Teaching Staff Award ceremony at Drobo at the weekend. Mr. Badu-Yeboah said recalcitrant teachers may have to forfeit their salaries or have their promotion frozen and would face the District Disciplinary Committee and the District Education Oversight Committee, which may recommend the dismissal of such teachers.
He expressed appreciation for the support the district was receiving from the District Assembly, donor agencies and the government in helping to raise the standard of education in the area.
The acting director announced that a wide range of measures was being put in place to help improve the performance of schools in the district in the 2003 Basic Education Certificate Examinations. The district placed seventh out of the 13 districts in the region and 54th at the national level in the examinations.
Mr. Johnson Ofori Asubonteng, District Chief Executive, urged teachers in the district to redouble efforts to help improve the performance of the district in the BECE.
He acknowledged the immense support from the Social Investment Fund (SIF), GETFUND, HIPC towards the renovation and rehabilitation of schools in the district.
The DCE noted that 25 schools had been completed under the SIF, nine under the District Assembly Common Fund and 15 under the HIPC Project.
Mr. Asubonteng mentioned that ActionAID Ghana and the European Union had also assisted in the construction of buildings for several schools and called for the completion of the District Education office, for which the District Assembly had provided 400 million cedis. Beyeeman Bosea Gyinantwi 1V, Omanhene of Drobo Traditional Area, who presided, congratulated the award winning teachers and urged them to improve their contributions towards education in the district. He said the traditional council was doing its best to help improve the standard of education in the area, citing that the council was putting up a library and appealed for books to stock it on completion.
