Amasaman, June 13, GNA - A 27-member premier fire cadet corps formed at the John Teye Memorial Institute, passed out at a ceremony at the school's premises at Amasaman last Friday.
Speaking after inspecting their parade under the command of Assistant Fire Officer Ebenezer Acheampong, Mr A.B. Gaisie, National Deputy Chief Fire Officer commended the pupil cadets for the "smart turn out and discipline".
He pointed out that the site of the School demanded that, "safety measures should be part of management of the school and fire safety is the best choice.
Mr Gaise bemoaned the poor habit of Ghanaians about safety measures in their daily lives and called for more awareness on causes of five insisting that, basic lessons on preventive measures against fire must be included in the curricula of nursery and higher educational institutions.
The Deputy Chief Fire Officer said that, to ensure adequate safety of citizens "all schools must be taught to prevent fire than fighting it as a national policy".
Earlier, Mr Lawrence Otutey John Teye, Director of the Institute stated that the cadets should regard themselves as model cadet corps in schools in Ghana and promised that they would be attired fully and used to represent the school at official functions like Independence Day celebrations.
Highlight of the ceremony was a demonstration in fire fighting by the pupil cadet corps and staff, including kitchen staff and the Director.
Nana Sarkodie a pupil cadet was adjudged the best overall cadet, while Rita Bekoe earned the best girl while Frank Adjotey received the best boy prize.
In attendance was the John Teye Institute Band. Among those present was Mr Kofi Simmous, Ga District Fire Officer. 13 June 04
