Asante Akim Central Municipality is closing the gender gap in basic education, with more girls writing this year’s re-scheduled Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).
Out of a total of 1,361 candidates presented for the examinations, 685 were girls and 676 were boys. These were from 9 private and 32 public schools.
Mr. Daniel Akwasi Adarkwah, Assistant Director in charge of examinations, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), lauded education stakeholders for the feat which signalled a positive step in girl-child education.
He urged parents, guardians, Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), School Management Committees (SMCs), and traditional rulers, to lend support to efforts at increasing girl-child enrolment in schools, to help produce brilliant girls to bridge the gender gap.
There were no hitches, and the candidates were calmly writing the examinations when the GNA toured some of the centres with the Assistant Director.
GNA checks, however, revealed that four teachers were among the 14 picked for alleged leakage of the question papers.
