Jomoro assembly establishes welfare for 'murder" victim

Jomoro (W/R) July 16, GNA-The Jomoro District Assembly has established an emergency welfare fund for Miss Rose Amina Abdulai, a 30-year-old teacher at the Tikobo Number One District Council Primary School whose wrists were severed by Mr. Clement Koffi Andwi-Aka, her lover and co-teacher of the same school on June 22 this year. Both wrists of Amina had to be amputated due to the multiple wounds she had sustained on it and on her head.

Mr. Martin N. Ackah, District Chief Executive for Jomoro who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Half Assini on Friday said the fund had become necessary since the victim would need constant care because the injuries she sustained and the amputation had made her totally reliant on others to perform basic functions on her own. Mr. Ackah said though the assembly donated one million cedis towards her upkeep, the severity of her problem needed massive support, to enable her cope with her new conditions. He therefore, appealed to individuals, non-governmental organisations, to assist the victim to undergo rehabilitation and other necessary counselling and support services to enable her become less dependent.

Dr. Sarpong Pepera, Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Effia Nkwanta Hospital, who operated on the hands of the victim, said that was the only option to save her life.

He said the victim bled profusely but her timely arrival saved her life and asked her family and relations to support her constantly. Dr. Pepera said Amina would need to undergo rehabilitation, counselling and physiotherapy to enable her use the remaining arms. He said she would also need artificial wrists to ease her anxiety and other psychological pain that she may encounter. Ms. Amina and Andwi-Aka were lovers for eight years and had intended to marry and used to spend weekends with the suspect at Ezinlibo, his hometown about four kilometres from Tikobo Number One but the relationship went sour.

On June 20 this year around 20.30 hrs. the accused allegedly paid a surprise visit to Amina but she was not at home. He then went to the house of Mr. Innocent Kebir, a National Service Personnel teaching at the same school and saw them kissing.

Two days later, the Andwi-Aka allegedly went to the house of Amina at 2030 hrs. but could not find her and waited at the main gate of her house until 0115 hrs when Kobir came to see her off. As soon as Amina entered the house, Andwi-Aka emerged from his hiding place with a sharp cutlass, pounced and inflicted multiple wounds on her and severed both wrists, hands and inflicted wounds on her head. Not satisfied, Andwi-Aka went to the house of Kebir with the cutlass, inflicted several wounds on him and bolted.

Both victims were rushed to Half Assini Government Hospital the same night but Kebir died soon after admission while Amina was referred to the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital where she is still on admission after her wrists and part of her hands were amputated. Andwi-Aka has been remanded in prison custody by a Sekondi District Magistrate Court and would re-appear on July 25.
