KATH donates books to school

Barekuma (Ash), May 06, GNA - The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in collaboration with the School of Medical Sciences (SMS) of KNUST and the University of Utah School of Medicine on Friday presented books worth 27.4 million cedis to the Barekuma L/A Basic Schools in the Atwima Nwabiagya District.

The books included mathematics for primary 1-6, English textbooks for JSS and integrated science books for JSS. The books were donated under the Barekuma Collaborative Community Project, a research project, which is being carried out by KATH, KNUST SMS, University of Utah School of Medicine and the Atwima Nwabiagya District Assembly in Barekuma, Aninkrumah and Kumi. The project, which is being conducted in health, education and the environment, seeks to identify and assess the health needs of the people, especially children under five years. It also seeks to improve educational infrastructure and encourage school children to be interested in science and mathematics and assist the communities to have potable water and to protect their environment. Presenting the books Dr Anthony Nsiah Asare, Chief Executive of KATH, said the project was to encourage the school children to study mathematics and science.

He said a scholarship scheme would be instituted under the project to assist children who would excel. Dr Nsiah-Asare said discussions were going on to source funding to build quarters for teachers in the project area. Mr Thomas Ofori Donkor, DCE for Atwima Nwabiagya, thanked the hospital for the initiative and said the assembly would continue to offer assistance to ensure the success of the project.
