Some selected schools in the Kumasi Metropolis were visited by the Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolis, Hon. Samuel Sarpong as he joined in the marking of ‘My first Day at School’ programme.
These institutions are, Awere M/A Basic School at Asafo, New Aboabo M/A at Aboabo, Breman R/C School at Breman, Central Agric Station Primary and JHS at Kwadaso Agric, and Atwima Denkyemmuosu School.
For these schools it was motivating and encouraging as the mayor took hours off his busy schedule to visit them that day. Hon. Samuel Sarpong had one message for which he carried around, and that was the “need for education” to the nation, society, and the individual. He observed that education is a major contributor to national development; as it equips people with the necessary skills and knowledge that improves standards of living. “Parents and guardians should see the importance of education and further impact these ideologies to their wards that they may not be reluctant to schooling or training”.
The Mayor revealed to the pupils to develop their mental capabilities by reflecting on what they are taught in schools as this is the only way they can succeed in their educational careers.
He made it known that nation building requires the contribution of technocrats, specialists, well thinkers, diplomats, and educated personalities. All these people he said can be produced through inspiring our children and the youth to pursue education to the highest levels as they can. At Awere M/A School, the headmaster, Mr. Appiah Boateng noted that his institution is facing a major problem as they are not enjoying the School Feeding Programme but neighboring school, A.M.E. Zion who are on the same compound are benefitting.
This, he said, has raised many complaints from parents who tend to sending way their wards to schools benefitting from the initiative.
Another concern noted was raised by the Headmistress of Breman R/C Primary B School, Mrs. Phyllis Onyinah who complained bitterly about the lack of fence wall around the school.
This she said has paved way for commuters to invade in to the school compound to steal learning materials including school desks. She added that, many are the times that school children have to clean human wastes from classrooms and offices which she described as health threat to the children. She pleaded for school toilet, new classroom block and furniture. Mrs. Victoria Owusu, Headmistress for Central Agric Station School told the Mayor to see to the completion of an uncompleted storey building to be used as classrooms. She also made mention of the need for electricity and water pump for a dug well in the school. Hon. Samuel Sarpong donated various items including school uniforms, school bags, drinking cups to school children.
