Richard Ofori Agyemang is the Mayor of Kumasi
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has announced plans to begin legal prosecution against individuals who improperly dispose of waste within the metropolis, effective Monday, April 13, 2026.
The initiative aims to curb the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on roundabouts, road medians, and streets — a practice authorities say continues to make the central business district and surrounding areas unhealthy, while increasing sanitation management costs.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, April 9, 2026, the Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang, disclosed that offenders will be taken to court and may face fines or imprisonment if found guilty.
The Mayor further encouraged the public to support the initiative by reporting offenders to the nearest police station. He added that informants whose reports lead to successful prosecution will receive half of the fine imposed on offenders.
As part of measures to improve sanitation, the Assembly will position thirty 1,000-litre dustbins at strategic locations across the city, which residents are expected to use for proper waste disposal.
He also appealed to traders, particularly market women operating along pavements, to cooperate with authorities to ensure the success of the exercise.
The Assembly believes that the enforcement of these measures will significantly improve sanitation and promote a cleaner, healthier Kumasi.
