KNUST student embarks on 'Peace in Grave' art campaign

A 25-year-old student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is embarking on a peaceful election campaign through the use of a series of artwork.

Godwin Addo wants to use artworks to promote sustainable peace before, during and after the November general elections.

The peace project dubbed “Peace in Grave” is currently 60 percent complete but Godwin needs public support to complete the artworks. He has creatively designed the map of Ghana using local symbols to depict the need to sustain the peace in the country.

He has also designed placards with several messages promoting peace.

He told TV3 that he is not been enthused about the heightened tension that often characterizes election season, and believes the arts could serve as the means to avert election-related violence.

He said efforts to promote peaceful co-existence should be encouraged, rather than wait to resolve violence.

“We always write on the grave of people ‘Rest In Peace’ but we hardly think about peace when we are alive. If the dead want peace, what about the living? Peace should be the paramount to us all especially as we enter into an election period. We cannot risk our peace for anything”.

Godwin’s uncle, Christian Boi-Asiedu, is currently the one supporting the initiative to promote peace.

“I just saw the concept to be a laudable one which needs to be embraced by each and every Ghanaian because peace is supreme over everything. We have all witnessed how violence has crippled some countries and I don’t think as Ghanaians we would want to do anything destabilize the peace we are currently enjoying," he said.
