Fielmua (U/W), Jan. 5, GNA - For the first time since the inception of the Senior Secondary School concept, more than 30 students of Kanton Secondary School at Tumu have qualified to pursue further courses in the country's tertiary institutions.
They have therefore, broken the jinx that had bedevilled them for over a decade when no single students qualified for a tertiary course in the past years.
Mr. Moses Dani Baah, Member of Parliament for Sissala, who announced this during the annual 'Kukur Baghr' festival organised by the Fielmua Area Development Association (FADA), attributed the past poor performance to lack of qualified teachers and incentives for them to accept postings to the area.
"It is a pity that a school, which was established so many years before the educational reforms could not boast of a single pass in the years gone by," he added.
He said the government was addressing such issues by coming out with model schools in every district to improve on the performance of students.
The MP urged the people to reciprocate government's efforts by sending their children to school to learn to come out of abject poverty and illiteracy.
Mr. Baah who is also the Deputy Minister of Health, urged politicians not to politicise the creation of new districts and constituencies.
According to him, some politicians were trying to score cheap political points by saying that the timing was inappropriate. "The creation is rather made to bring democracy to the doorsteps of everybody as some areas are so large and cannot be accessed easily," he held.
Mr Joseph Tanye, Vice President of FADA, commended the MP and the government for providing a Pick-up vehicle to the health centre and appealed for the supply of electricity to the centre.
