Kenyasi takes steps to protect its remaining forest

Mr Michael Nsiah-Agyapong, Asutifi District Chief Executive, has appealed to stakeholders in the protection of the District's remaining forests to adopt a more pro-active stance to stem their continued depletion by some unscrupulous persons.

He said the widespread defiance of the ban on chainsaw operations in the District was a major concern and vowed to declare a relentless war against the perpetrators.

Mr Nsiah-Agyapong made the call at a workshop ACTIONAID, Ghana and the Asutifi District Assembly organised to train chairmen and secretaries of the District's town and area councils.

He said work on the construction of office accommodation for six out of the nine councils which took off last year was expected to be completed this year while the remaining three were slated for 2004.

Mr Nsiah-Agyapong expressed disgust at the politicisation of national issues in the District and said this could further polarize the people and retard progress.

He expressed optimism that the administrators of the councils would shed off their entrenched political positions and work diligently to move the District forward.

The Asutifi District Coordinating Director, Mr. S.B. Kyei called on the councillors to help improve the District's "abysmal revenue status" through effective monitoring and supervision of all authorized revenue collectors.

The DCE presented each council with the portrait of the President of Ghana, Mr john Agyekum Kufuor and two National Flags as symbols of authority in their offices.
