Keta Senior High School wins Humans Rights competition

Accra, Dec. 08, GNA - Keta Senior High School from the Volta region on Saturday amassed 65-points to emerge the grand winner of 2007 Human Rights Nationwide Quiz competition for second cycle institutions organised by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) in collaboration with Ghana Education Services (GES). Ghana Secondary School from Tamale in the Northern Region followed second with 60 points; closely followed by Winneba Senior High School from the Central Region with 59.5 points for the third place and Notre Dame Senior High School from Brong Ahafo Region came forth with 44 points.

All the participating schools were given a certificate, CHRAJ 2005 Annual Report, a copy of the Conflict of Interest Guidelines, parcel and undisclosed sum of money.

The Competition forms part of activities for this year's celebration Human Rights week on the general theme: "Human Rights and Social Justice in Ghana @ 50: Have we come of Age?

The quiz competition was launched in 2005 as base to engage the youth in human rights activities and create a platform for the involvement of secondary schools and students in constitutionalism. Presenting the prizes to the schools, Mr. Richard Quayson a Deputy Commissioner of CHRAJ outlined the mandate of the commission and encouraged the students to engage in human rights activities. He said the Commission exists to enhance the scale of good governance, democracy, integrity, peace and social development by promoting, protecting and enforcing fundamental human rights and freedoms and administrative justice for all persons in Ghana. Mr Quayson said CHRAJ mandate also involved ensuring a culture of respect for the rights and obligations of all people in Ghana dispense and promote justice in a free, informal and relatively expeditious manner.

Ensure fairness, efficiency, transparency and application of best practices using a well-trained and motivated workforce and the most modern technology. Ms. Lilian Ayete-Nyampong, Deputy Director Public Education Department of CHRAJ explained that the competition covered areas such as human rights and international human rights, general knowledge on CHRAJ activities, Chapter five of the 1992 Constitution, Child labour and its worst forms - conventions, corruption and general current affirs.
