Kete Krachi Timber Recovery Limited refurbishes Sedorm CHPS compound

Kete Krachi Timber Recovery (KKTR) Limited, a privately held Ghanaian-owned company that runs a timber salvage operation on Lake Volta has renovated the Sedorm CHPS Compound, located at Sedorm, in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region at the cost of GHS20,000.

The health facility was built in 2004 by the erstwhile Kufuor administration as part of the HIPC beneficiary projects. The facility was in a deplorable state as a result of a lack of maintenance activities. The situation forced health personnel at the facility to carry out services partially.

A short ceremony was held in the community on Friday, March 13, 2020, to unveil the refurbished facility. The company also presented wooden benches to the facility and Sapaw CHPS Compound, also located in the Asuogyaman District.

The renovation works which took one month to complete involved a complete replacement of roofing sheets, ceiling, plumbing and electrical systems and painting works at the clinical and residential sections of the facility.

Mr. Prince Ofori-Boateng, the Compliance and Regulatory Officer of KKTR made the presentation at the ceremony on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer of KKTR, Mr.Elkin Pianim to the representative of the Asuogyaman District Chief Executive, Mr. Daniel Akoto Siaw (District Information Officer). He said the project is an initiative by the company to improve the welfare of the community and help contribute towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 3. He said the company has already provided a borehole to the community as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility initiative.

Speaking on behalf of the District Chief Executive, Mr. Daniel Akoto Siaw commended the company for complementing the government’s effort in improving the well being of the people of the Sedorm and its catchment area. He also commended the company for contributing to the local economy of the district by employing a sizeable number of people from the district.

The Sub-Chief of Sedorm, Mantse Kwesi Asare thanked the company for assisting the community in the area of health care services. He said the intervention has come timely and will improve health delivery in the community. He commended the company for improving the welfare of the community. He said the community has no public toilet facility, hence people in the community defecate into the Volta Lake which serves as the only drinking water in the community. The incidence of bilharzia(schistosomiasis) and other water-borne diseases used to be high in the community.

The borehole provided by the community some years ago has reduced the incidence of water-borne diseases. He appealed to the District Assembly to provide the community with a public toilet facility to end the open defecation menace.

Eunice Obeng who represented the District Director of Asuogyaman District Health Directorate at the ceremony thanked the company for their effort in enhancing health delivery services in the community. She said that the Directorate will post a permanent health personnel to stay at the facility to respond to health-related cases on a 24-hour basis.

She also said the district will soon benefit from the Zipline medical drone delivery services initiative by the government and the Sedorm CHPS Compound has been earmarked as one of the beneficiary facilities in the district.
