Ketu Assembly to block roads to fight Coronavirus

The Keta Municipal Assembly will from next week Monday, mount roadblocks to screen travelers into the Municipality from adjoining districts as part of measures to fight the spread of Coronavirus.

The Assembly would employ all forms of screening including the non-contact infrared thermometer gun in checking travelers.

The initiative is to help the Assembly track travelers with the virus entering the Municipality for the appropriate measures to manage the disease from spreading into the Municipality.

Mr Godwin Edudzi Effah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Keta who disclosed this during a press briefing at Keta, said the checkpoints which would be mounted at entry points to the Municipality would help in early detection of the disease in a bid to protect the lives of residents.

He said the three barriers would be mounted at Abor Junction, Keta Business College (Ketabusco) Junction and Havedzi to screen travelers seeking to enter the Municipality from Akatsi District, Anloga District, and Ketu South Municipality respectively.

The press briefing was to update the citizenry on the Keta situation regarding a suspected case of COVID-19 in the area involving a cook on a Korean owned fishing vessel who the local fishers brought ashore.

The MCE said the “Keta Municipal Health Directorate on April 06, 2020, received the feedback from Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) through the Volta Regional Health Directorate that the laboratory result is negative.”

He assured the residents especially the fisher folks that they had, “nothing to fear” as the Municipality had not recorded any positive case of the COVID-19 disease and that it would do everything possible to prevent the disease from entering the area.

Mr Effah, therefore, asked the people to observe personal hygiene, social distancing, avoid mass gatherings and comply with other directives announced by the President in a bid to prevent the spread of the pandemic.
