Koforidua Prisons staff undertakes projects

Koforidua, Sept 17, GNA - The officers and inmates of the Koforidua Prisons are building a 10-unit staff quarters and converting a 12-seat KVIP system and bath into a 28-seat water closet and showers. The staff quarters, now at lintel level, is being financed with contributions from the officers and the Prisons Headquarters has provided materials worth about 36 million cedis for the WC and shower project.

The Officer-In-Charge of the Prisons, Assistant Director of Prison Maclean Wilkinson, told the GNA on Wednesday that the staff and inmates have already completed a two-unit secretariat office block for the Eastern Regional Commander of Prisons who is expected to re-locate there from the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons.

He said water supply for the 426 inmates had been the main problem facing the Prisons, saying the Ghana Water Company's (GWC) pipe-borne water system mostly serves their reservoir twice weekly for short periods during the night.

This is barely enough for the cooking their meals and the inmates are served three cupfuls water daily for drinking.

He commended Dr Edmund Delle, Managing Director of the Rabito Clinics, who recently gave a standing order that a tanker service costing 180,000 cedis per trip should supply water to the Prisons during "critical periods."

Mr. Wilkinson also commended religious and benevolent organisations including the World Mission International for donating four foot-sewing machines second hand clothing and other items to the inmates.
