Some traders at Cape Coast Kotokuraba Market, have expressed apprehension about the newly constructed temporary market stores meant to relocate them to pave way for the construction of a new market.
They cited reasons such as lack of security, quality of material used, the allocation of the shops and cubicles and inadequate toilet facilities. Maame Ama Gyamfua, a rice retailer, told Ghana News Agency in an interview on Wednesday that she is scared of the structures because the materials used look fragile and could cave in when brisk business starts.
Mrs Eva Mensah, a shop owner expressed unhappiness about the fact that some of the traders would be relocated to Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) Regional Office Area, whilst others would stay close to the new market. She said such an arrangement could collapse the business of those who would be at GBC area.
“I will have preferred that all traders are relocated to one place so that there will be some level of fairness because the GBC area is a little far from the central business market,” she stated.
Auntie Esi Abokoma, a vegetable seller complained about the absence of toilet facilities in the new structure, adding that the current facility is too small and needs to be rehabilitated.
Mr Nicholas Addo, Information Officer of the Metropolitan Assembly, explained that all concerns being raised by the traders were considered before the structure was constructed and gave the assurance that the material used is of high quality.
He said the Assembly has the comfort and security of the traders at heart and had put in measures to ensure the safety of users.
