Tema, April 10, GNA -- The chiefs and people of Tema have celebrated their annual Kpledzoo Festival to usher in the Hommowo Festival.

According to Nii Armah Somponu, Shiipi of Tema, the celebration of Kpledzoo makes Tema the only town in the Ga state that celebrates two festivals.

He said Kpledzoo is celebrated to signify the need to be united explaining that 'doing things in unity yields better results than if it is done individually'.

Different youth groups, most of them dressed in red and black, moved to the durbar grounds amidst drumming, dancing and singing to greet the Tema Mantse Nii Adjei Kraku II.

Nii Armah Somponu said there would be a weeklong programme that will include cleaning of the environment through communal labour, public education on social problems including HIV/AIDS. The period is also used to settle family disputes.

In an address the Tema Mantse, Nii Adjei Kraku II, advised parents on the need to invest in their children's education to ensure that they have a better future.

He said farming had been affected by the industrialisation of Tema and the only way out is to ensure that their children have good education.

''Unlike in the past when fishing activities yielded a lot of bumper harvest, these days the influx of trawlers and other big fishing vessels have deprived the smaller canoe fishermen of their catches thereby affecting their livelihood,'' Nii Adjei Kraku said.
