Johnson Asiedu Nketiah is the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress
Correspondence from Eastern Region
The Divisional Chief of Kpong in the Manya Krobo Traditional Area, Nene Kpabitey Nyarko II, has called on the leadership of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to resume stalled road construction projects in Kroboland and fulfil other key campaign promises made ahead of the 2024 general elections.
He appealed during the NDC’s Eastern Regional appreciation tour, led by National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who is visiting several constituencies across the region to thank party supporters for their role in securing the party’s landmark victory over the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 polls.
Stalled road works raise concerns
The chief expressed frustration over the abandoned road works along the Somanya–Kpong and Somanya-Asitey stretches, projects started under the previous NPP administration. According to him, the projects have remained untouched for the past nine months since the NDC assumed office, worsening conditions for commuters and businesses that rely heavily on the route.
“I want to talk about the state of our roads from Somanya to Kpong. This is a stronghold of the NDC, so I wish the chairman would take it up so that the roads will be done as soon as possible,” Nene Kpabitey Nyarko II urged.
The poor state of the roads, he said, is affecting transportation and economic activities in the area and must be treated as a priority by the NDC government.
Calls for jobs and social interventions
Beyond infrastructure, the Kpong Chief urged the party to honour its pledge to create jobs for the youth, particularly those in the Manya Krobo district who actively supported the NDC during the campaign. He emphasised that the party must ensure its loyal grassroots members benefit from employment opportunities in public services and state institutions.
He also reminded the leadership of the NDC of its promise to establish a women’s bank, designed to provide financial assistance to women entrepreneurs across the country. The initiative, he stressed, would help women in Kroboland expand their businesses and support their families.
Nene Kpabitey Nyarko II further appealed for the extension of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program to include elderly party loyalists and cadres who, according to him, worked tirelessly for the party during difficult times.
Government assures action
In response, Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Awatey, who joined the NDC chairman on the regional tour, assured residents that addressing the deplorable road networks remained a top priority for the government. She pledged that both major highways and inner roads across the affected areas would be fixed promptly.
Asiedu Nketiah’s tour
The three-day appreciation tour, which runs from September 17 to 19, is part of Asiedu Nketiah’s efforts to strengthen the NDC’s grassroots base. The party chairman is personally engaging traditional leaders, constituency executives, and supporters to express gratitude for their contribution to the NDC’s electoral success.
The tour has also provided a platform for local leaders such as Nene Kpabitey Nyarko II to press the party for swift action on campaign promises. As expectations rise, Krobo residents hope the NDC will soon turn its commitments into tangible development projects that improve lives across the Eastern Region.
