Kumasi, June 11, GNA - The people of Kronum in the Kumasi metropolis are to benefit from a number of development projects at the cost of two billion cedis to improve their living conditions. The projects include the construction of a two-classroom kindergarten block, a six-classroom block, office and store for the Metropolitan Assembly Primary School and a clinic for the community. Mr Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, Member of Parliament (MP) for Suame, who announced this at a meeting with the people at Kronum on Sunday, said the projects would be funded from his part of the MPs' Common Fund, the government support and other voluntary contributions. The meeting also afforded the MP the opportunity to interact with the people to brief them on the activities of Parliament as well as the government's policies and programmes.
He said the government was committed to the development of all communities and that it would not discriminate against any community in the provision of infrastructure facilities to enhance their living conditions.
Mr Mensah-Bonsu said the government was deeply concerned with solving the energy crisis, adding that plans were far advanced for Parliament to pass the Bui Dam Authority Bill as well as import some generators into the country to boost energy production. The MP said in order to promote education in the area, he had instituted a scholarship scheme to assist needy but brilliant students at all levels, adding that 16 students were awarded scholarships totalling 50 million cedis last year to support their education. On the National Health Insurance Scheme, Mr Mensah-Bonsu appealed to the people to embrace the scheme and to register and pay their premiums to enable them access the needed health care.
Mr Obeng Poku, Assemblyman for Kronum, commended the MP for providing them with 20 million cedis towards the provision of bulbs for the streetlight project.
The people complained about the delay in the rehabilitation of the Kumasi-Techiman road saying it was causing a lot of convenience including traffic jams and appealed to the contractor to speed up work to avoid such problems. Nana Adu Gyamfi Kumanin, chief of Kwapra, who presided, appealed to the youth to avoid negative practices and contribute meaningfully towards the development of the area. 11 June 07
