Kumasi Metropolitan Education pays hospital bill of a pupil

Kumasi, April 11, GNA- The Kumasi Metropolitan Education Directorate on Friday, donated a cash of GH¢500 to parents of Master Desmond Adu, a primary four pupil to defray his medical cost at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). Master Adu was detained at KATH for his parent's inability to pay for his medical bills covering the treatment of head injuries. Desmond, who is a pupil of Yennyawoso Presbyterian Primary School in Kumasi, had been held "hostage" at the hospital for three more weeks after he had been discharged.

Mr Joseph Kwabena Onyinah, the Metropolitan Education Director, who donated the cheque, advocated for the establishment of an emergency fund at the Directorate for poor and needy pupils to be assisted with their health care needs. He noted that the Directorate has initiated an education awareness programme to encourage its staff and guardians to register with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) so that school children could have access to health care.

Madam Margaret Adu, mother of the patient who received the cheque, thanked the Directorate for the gesture. She explained that her son was hit on the head by one Master Agyekum after a quarrel and that Adu collapsed as a result and was subsequently rushed to the KATH where he was treated. The staff of Yennyawoso Presbyterian Primary School contributed GH¢200 whiles the Metropolitan Education Directorate supplemented it with GH¢300.
