Kumasi Poly students boycott lectures over 'dumsor'

Students of the Kumasi Polytechnic in the Ashanti Region have threatened a boycott of lectures over the increasing spate of power outages on campus.

The school has been without electricity for nearly a week now which has compelled students to devise different ways of studying at night.

Most of them indicate that the situation has left them at the mercy of miscreants who are capitalizing on the dark campus to perpetrate various forms of crimes.

The aggrieved students, who are unwilling to stay in darkness for another day, are threatening to boycott lectures to demand the immediate restoration of lights on campus.

The Kumasi Polytechnic had been cut off from the national grid for nonpayment of electricity bills amounting to 3 million Ghana cedis

Students of the Kumasi Polytechnic, as a result, have opted to make contributions to offset the bill, but this has hit a dead end with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) unwilling to restore light until the amount owed is paid.

Students have been enduring the repercussions with no sign of an end to the situation which has now led to students issuing threats to authorities of the school to either resolve the matter or incur their wrath

Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the Polytechnic, Robert Kyei Gyau said the power cut is as a result of inconsistencies on the part of government as to whether utility bills are to be paid by government or the school.

He said students have opted to make contributions to pay for the bills, but the students have expressed their disappointment at the development. They told ultimate106.com that they were unwilling to endure their current predicament for another day.
