The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has unveiled branded tricycles popularly called ‘aboboya’ to be used for only solid waste collection and disposal in the metropolis.

The orange-painted tricycles have been registered with specific identification numbers and tags.

Branding of the tricycles became prudent, according to Kumasi Mayor Osei Assibey Antwi, so as to differentiate between those used for carrying solid waste from those used for ferrying food items.

Mr Assibey Antwi said this at a short ceremony to unveil the tricycles on Monday, 12 March 2018.

Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Mr Joseph Kofi Adda, commended the KMA for the initiative.

He said the assembly has taken a bold step but cannot achieve the desired results without the support and cooperation of the residents in the city.

Mr Adda, therefore, urged residents to give their solid waste to only the branded tricycles and report those who use unbranded tricycles for the same purpose.

He also entreated all the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies to emulate the KMA's initiative and consult them when they have any sanitation challenges to address.
