The timely intervention of a combined team of armed police and military personnel from the Regional Police headquarters prevented what could have passed for a bloodbath between aggrieved drivers in Kumasi and a private developer.
The developer whose name is not immediately known claims the Dr Mensah bus terminal is his, adding that there are documents to that effect and therefore wants drivers occupying the place to immediately vacate in accordance with an order from the High Court
The move triggered the anger of the commercial drivers who have been operating from the area for ages resulting in a standoff between his supporters and the drivers.
But the commercial drivers are pointing accusing finger at the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) Osei Assibey Antwi for the near chaotic situation between them and the said private developer.
According to the drivers, KMA has not informed them that the land they occupy belongs to a group or an individual and that the Mayor, Osei Assibey Antwi should be blamed for the chaotic situation on Thursday morning.
“We blame the Mayor for all this confusion. …If the land we have occupied for ages belongs to some private person at least we should be given notice”, the drivers cried out.
Our Ashanti Regional Correspondent Kwabena Danso-Dapaah who visited the area reports some security personnel were seen supervising the fencing of the station while the drivers were tearing down the wire mesh.
However, the reporter's attempt to get understanding from the city authorities hit a snag as the Mayor was unavailable at his office or on phone for comment.
