Residents of Kuntunse in the Greater Accra region are raising concerns over a planned demolition of their houses by authorities of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission.
According to residents, the management of the Atomic Energy has served them notices of the impending exercise.
The Atomic Energy, according to sources, is demolishing the over 300 houses to make way for a new project on the parcel of land which they claim was sold to them some years back.
But the leadership of the residents who poured their frustration to StarrFMonline.com over the matter in an interview insisted that court documents available to them suggest that portion of the land was not sold to the state.
They added that even the supposedly sold portion has not been paid for by the state. They said the chief who inherited the land from his father has denied the alleged sale with the necessary documentation.
Some of the documents, including a court ruling and a publication in the state-owned Daily Graphic they showed to StarrFMonline.com corroborated their claims.
One of their leaders Amonkotey said: “They are coming to destroy our homes when we have shown them the evidence that the land does not belong to the state. We have secured the court ruling on the matter and publications to that effect, but they insist on pulling down these numerous apartments.
“We are appealing to the President to step in because these are homes that we built with our monies. We understand the President has set up a meeting between them and the Works and Housing minister over the matter so they want to destroy the homes even before the meeting takes place”.
Several calls by StarrFMonline.com to officials of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission for their position on the development went unanswered.
