Mamponteng (Ash), Dec.22, GNA - The Kwabre District Assembly on Monday honoured Nana Kwame Asante-Frempong, former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Kwabre for his meritorious contributions towards the political independence and development of the district.

He was presented with a stool, kente and traditional sandals. Making the presentation on behalf of the assembly, Alhaji Ahmed Akwasi Yeboah, Kwabre District Chief Executive, said the assembly was proud of the contributions of Nana Asante-Frempong towards progress of the district.

He said the stool signified that the former MP had been appointed a permanent member of the assembly.

Nana Asante-Frempong in accepting the honour attributed the slow pace of development within the district to the multiple traditional rulers within an assembly.

He said the idea to establish a rural bank within the district mooted several years ago was still on the drawing board due to lack of unity among the various traditional rulers within the district. Nana Asante-Frempong said the assembly had the responsibility to serve as the rallying point to unite the people for their economic independence.

He was among the people who spearheaded the creation of Kwabre district from Afigya-Sekyere.

After creation of the district in 1988, Nana Asante-Frempong became an assembly member and was made the presiding member in 1990, a position he retained for three consecutive periods before appointed a member of the Constituent assembly, which drafted the 1992 constitution. Nana Asante-Frempong was elected an NPP Member of Parliament in 1996 and served in that capacity until 2004 when he lost the primaries.
