Mamponteng (Ash), July 1, GNA - The Kwabre district recorded a total of 64 dog bites at the veterinary clinic for last year, while 32 dog bites have been recorded between January and March this year. Dr Kofi Kwansah-Filson, the District Director of Agriculture, who announced this, said the trend was not encouraging but that efforts are being made by his outfit to help check the incidence.
He was presenting two reports on Pets/Pet Owners and the 2004 anti-rabies campaign it undertook to the Kwabre district assembly at Mamponteng on Tuesday.
Dr Kwansah-Filson said the district had a pet population of 2,145 made up of 2,075 dogs, 107 cats and three monkeys.
He stated that the compilation of the pet population in the district was to facilitate the collection of licenses and registration fees.
The District Directorate of Agriculture, which will soon be called the Agricultural Development Unit of the assembly also used the occasion to present eight million cedis to the assembly as licenses and registration fees it collected for the immunisation of pets in the district. Dr Kwansah-Filson said the directorate spent 45 million cedis for the control of rabies in the district this year to protect the people against dog bites.
Alhaji Kwasi Yeboah, Kwabre District Chief Executive who received the reports on behalf of the assembly, commended the directorate for its efforts in coming out with the two documents.
He hoped the other departments would emulate the example of the agriculture unit and also come out with reports to enhance the development of the district. 1 July, 04
