Accra, Nov. 7, GNA - Mrs Adzorkor Doku, Director of Food and Agriculture at Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has called for fair trade on the international market for African farmers. She explained that this would be more beneficial to the farmers and socio-economic development of African countries. Mrs Doku made the call at this year's AMA Farmers' Day celebration held at Ako Adjei Park, La on Friday. She deplored the influx of foreign products onto the Ghanaian market which had become a source of worry to local farmers due to their cheap prices.

Mrs Doku urged farmers not to give up in the face of stiff competition on the international market but improve on their production, marketing strategies, advice from extension workers and embrace modern farming technology.

Nii Stanley Adjiri Blankson, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive said the Metropolis had about 20 per cent of farmers in the country. He called on Ghanaians to pay attention to climate change since it played an important role in the agricultural industry and other aspects of the nation's development. Nii Blankson said Government had reviewed agricultural bye-laws, Livestock Development Fund and created congenial atmosphere for increased agricultural production to improve the living standards of farmers.

Mr Kwame Kpomasi was adjudged the best farmer in the Metropolis and was presented with farming inputs and home appliances. Mrs Stella Asante was the best poultry farmer and Mr Nurudeen Mohamed the best livestock farmer. The rest were, Mr Seth Okine best physically challenged farmer and Mr Francis Nii Lantey Addy best youth farmer.
