THE FIRST phase of the proposed ?200milion street lighting project for the people of New Mantease in La, a suburb of Accra, has been launched. The project, initiated by the Assemblyman for the area, Hon Gans Lartey, is to provide 100 street lights to all the dark points identified within the community.
Launching the facility in Accra over the weekend, the Mayor of Accra, Stanley Nii Adjiri Blankson, congratulated the Assembly member for his selfless commitment and dedication to the advancement of his people.
He asked the people to take good care of the lights as that is the only way government would be encouraged to support such community?based initiatives. He called on the people to unite and rally their support behind the Assemblyman to enable him fulfil the good plans he has earmarked for the community. Earlier, the Assemblyman, Mr. Gans Lartey assured the gathering that the two major problems facing the people, - the tiring of the Kukrudu road and the reconstruction of the drain on 24th Adeambua street would be tackled soon. He said the AMA has earmarked funds for the tiring of the road and called on philanthropists and opinion leaders to assist the assembly to continue to provide such projects to the community.
The AMA Chief Executive was later given a certificate of honour by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the La Dade Kotopon constituency of the Greater Accra Region.
In a related development, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has acquired a ?2.9billlion mobilisation fund to construct a market at Odawna, a suburb of Accra, to relocate hawkers.
Speaking to the press corps in Accra last week, the Chief Executive Officer of the Assembly, Mr. Stanley Nii Adjiri Blankson, said after the completion of the project ?it will then become an offence for anybody to sell on the streets?. He said the AMA would not countenance any group of persons to hawk on the streets of the city once the project is done to help control sanitation in Accra and encourage local tourism.
He revealed that the market, which is estimated to cost ?9.9billion, would have 3600 stores, a warehouse, a lorry station as well as electricity and water facilities and will be controlled by staff of AMA.
Mr. Abraham Dwuma Odoom, Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, said his Ministry?s approval of the project was part of several measures to revitalise Accra economically.
He tasked the AMA to expedite action on the market to help resettle the hawkers, who were recently off the major streets of the city in a decongestion exercise embarked upon by the Assembly.
