Land guards terrorise residents of Gomoa Fetteh

Residents living in Gomoa Fetteh, Fetteh Kakraba and their adjoining communities in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region have expressed dissatisfaction over what they termed as the “lackadaisical” attitude on the part of the police administration to fight land-guard activities in these communities.

According to the residents, they were currently living in constant fear following the frequent attacks by heavily armed land-guards who constantly attack and terrorise some innocent landowners and developers in these communities on the blindside of the police officers.

Speaking in an interview with Today on Sunday, October 27, 2018, the worried residents blamed the development on the inaction of the police in the area to arrest and prosecute the culprits.

In this regard, they called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to impress upon the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr David Asante-Apeatu, to curb the menace.

“The gun-wielding land-guards forcibly invade our premises and fire gunshots even during the day to scare school children and innocent families and the entire Gomoa Fetteh, Fetteh Kakraba communities.

They subject individuals occupying lands on behalf of the original owners to severe beatings,” they disclosed.

They pointed out that the inaction of the police to arrest and prosecute these recalcitrant land-guards, raised a lot of questions, leaving one to feel that the police were compromising their mandate.

According to them, the rise in land-guard activities in the said communities was as a result of a call on the police administration by President Akufo-Addo to flush out land-guards in the country.

The residents questioned why the Operation Calm Life, an initiative, which targeted land-guards has been since ceased, adding that the initiative should be brought back to chase these land-guards away.

They further questioned why Dampareh, the Officer in charge of Operation Calm Life, was removed from his post since he was doing a good job by clamping down the activities of these land-guards.

There has been a series of land-guard incidents in Gomoa Fetteh and its environs, which have painted a bad picture of the region to the rest of the country.

The residents subsequently appealed to President Akufo-Addo to intervene in the matter.
