Lawra, (U/W), May 11, GNA - The Lawra District Assembly would this year spend a total of 17.2 billion cedis in the provision of potable water and sanitation projects throughout the district.
Under that programme 12 billion cedis would be spend on the rehabilitation and construction of Lawra, Nandom and Babile small towns water supply and sanitation systems 4.1 billion on 72 bore-holes, 500 million cedis on the construction of 50 bore-holes in trachoma and guinea-worm endemic areas and another 500 million cedis on 1000 household latrines throughout the district.
Mr Cyprian C.K. Douchebe, Lawra District Co-ordinating director announced this during the launching of Lawra District small towns water supply and sanitation project on Wednesday.
He said donor agencies were paying a chunk of 15.5 billion cedis while the district assembly and beneficiary communities were paying a counterpart of 1.6 billion cedis towards the projects.
Mr Douchebe appealed to beneficiary communities to pay their share of the funding in good time to enable all the projects to be executing good time.
Mr Ambrose Dery, Upper West Regional Minister who lauded the programme gave the assurance that the Lawra District Assembly in collaboration with community based rural development project were seriously working round to eradicate trachoma in the endemic areas. He commended the assembly for embarking on household latrines and encouraged them to construct more of them for the communities to rd the areas of malaria and other in sanitary related diseased.
The Regional Minister called for collaboration between all stakeholders in the implementation of small towns water systems to enable the people to get access to good drinking water. Mr Dery urged them to pay their tariffs promptly to enable the bodies operate frequently to serve the purpose for which they were established.
He tasked the boards and management of the water programmes to avoid embezzlement favouritism and inefficiency in the system. The Community Water and Sanitation agency was represented by the Regional Director Mrs Balindina B. Battir.
