Lawra, May 4, GNA - The Lawra District Assembly with the support of donors spend 2.8 billion cedis on the provision of educational facilities last year, as part of its measures to ensure quality education in the district.
These facilities included the construction of physical infrastructure, furniture, sponsorship of teacher-trainees and other educational programmes.
Mr Ambrose Dery, the Upper West Regional Minister said this when he interacted with a cross section of the people at Lawra, during which he explained key government policies to them.
He said as part of its development agenda, the assembly would provide each primary school with a day nursery in line with the government's policy of developing pre-school education as a key component of the educational reforms.
Mr Dery, who is also the acting Chief Executive of the district, assured the people that the Assembly would pay the monthly allowances of the attendants until the Ghana Educational Service took over that responsibility.
To address the problem of shortage of teachers in the district, he said 68 volunteer teachers had been recruited, while 132 others were pursuing various courses in higher institutions through out the country. On poverty alleviation, Mr Dery said last year, the assembly developed a poverty profiling and mapping document that contained pro-poor programming with focus on the future development of the district.
The document, he said outlined the roadmap towards alleviating the poverty level of their people through the implementation of various poverty reduction strategies. 4 May 05
