Lawra, Jan. 10, GNA - Lawra and Jirapa/Lambussie Districts in the Upper West Region on Friday held their People's Assembly at Lawra and Jirapa respectively as part of the activities marking the third year of the government.

The forum afforded the people, comprising assemblymen and women, traditional rulers, organised groups and the public the chance to quiz the Regional Minister, Mr Sahanun Mogtari and the Lawra and Jirapa/Lambussie District Chief Executives on their stewardship.

Most of the people commended the government for the novelty, which they described as giving them the rare opportunity to meet face to face with political heads to ask questions on issues agitating their minds. Mr Sylvanus Ganfaa, Lawra DCE and Mrs Winifred Dy-Yakah, Jirapa/Lambussie DCE, gave a catalogue of development projects in the areas of health, education, water and sanitation and poverty reduction among others sectors, which had been completed in the past three years. Speaking at the Lawra forum, Mr Ganfaa said the Assembly would sink 85 boreholes for some 80 communities and construct 351 household latrines for 15 communities and ten institutional latrines for selected schools this year.

He said 7.5 billion cedis would be spent on the expansion and extension of small town water system for Lawra, Nandom and Babile. Mrs Dy-Yakah said a total of 131 boreholes were drilled for various communities in the districts between the years 2002 and 2003 in the Jirapa/Lambussie district.

She said an additional 66 new boreholes would be drilled in the district this year.

The Regional Minister asked traditional rulers to take steps to resolve land and chieftaincy disputes.
